5 Fitness Getaways that Can Help You Stay Healthy On Vacation

Vacations don’t always have to be about relaxation or fitting as many calories as you can in during vacation.  You can have vacations that are actually very active!

  • Fiji:  I went almost a year ago for our honeymoon and aside from having serious withdrawals, it was not only a destination for relaxation, but also one that kept us active!  The food was fresh, well portioned, and always healthy!  Activities like snorkeling, hiking, and kayaking kept us active.  I would definitely recommend this destination from personal experience as a fun and active vacation with a hint of relaxation.
  • St. George, Utah:  This destination is on my places to visit as the hiking scenery looks INCREDIBLE!
  • Key West, Florida:  Love kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, paddle boarding, all things water activities…key west is the place to go!
  • Big Island, Hawaii: This destination is also on my places to visit as I do enjoy snorkeling, but more so the hiking!
  • Aspen, Colorado:  During the winter time, this destination becomes prime for snowboarding and skiing!

Gaining 10 Pounds in 6 Days

Some Fitness Professionals think they’re above eating whatever they want on vacation, while others are like me…they go IN. I eat well most of the time so why not indulge and splurge for a week on vacation?

Be prepared though because weight gain will most likely occur if you take my route and eat what’s put in front of you.  Also realize that most of what you gain will be water and not actually fat.

Why is this?  If you regularly keep up with your water drinking and then all of the sudden cut the water intake by more than 50% your body actually will retain water.  If you also are not used to a high sodium diet, eating foods high in sodium all day every day also create bloating and water retention.  48 hours post 10 pound weight gain in 6 days and I am down 5 pounds ONLY going back to eating my normal foods and drinking my regular gallon of water a day.  Weight that goes down that quickly is not usually fat weight.  Because I know my body already, I know that I probably have 3 more pounds of water weight that I will lost this week and then into next week drop the final 1-2 pounds and get back to “normal.”

So whatever you do when you get on the scale post vacation, DO NOT PANIC!  DO NOT go into mega restrictive mode, just get back into your regular diet, water, and exercise routine.

What if you eat a poor diet on a regular basis and then going on vacation to eat more crappy foods than what your usual crappy diet consists of?  Well, chances are that weight gain may not come off as quickly…and you probably gained more fat weight than the person who usually eats healthy did while on vacation…

Vacation Mode: Made in the USA with Dominican Parts

I spent this past week in Dominican Republic visiting family and for overall vacation.  It was INSANE we packed so much into so little time, I swear I woke up with a travel hangover.

  • Tuesday: we left Miami and arrived in the late afternoon.  I thought I would have a chance to unpack and catch up on some work, clients, etc.  Wrong!  I had 15 minutes to catch up with emails/clients and get dressed for a dinner at my grandparents house where the beast that s my stomach was unleashed.  4 plates od the best ceviche and 1 massive bowl of spaghetti and mushroom sauce later…despite the 15 pastelitos, fresh island mangos, and refresco country club we had on our way from the airport.  But hey, what’s travel without good food?
  • wednesday:  We left to punta cana with a pit stop in cap cana.  Next trip to the DR I definitely want to make more time for Cap Cana and go back…it is BREATHTAKING.  It’s a developing city/resort town, only it is going to be bigger and better than Punta Cana in my opinion.  Here we had MORE food!  Delicious ceviche, appetizer samplers, spicy shrimp tacos, and an epic nutella calzone.  We later arrived to Punta Cana with hopes of cooling off and relaxing by the beach, but we arrived as everything was closing down so we relaxed in our room (I caught up on some work) and head straight to dinner for even MORE food!
  • Thursday:  Our only full day at the Melia Caribe resort in Punta Cana.  Despite Only spending roughly 36 hours at the resort I ate for 5 (more food not pictured), but it was so refreshing to be connected to wifi from the beach and not just my sofa.
  • Friday:  We left the resort around midday and headed over to la Romana for a tourist stop in Altos de Chavon.  We arrived back to the capital a little later than expected, greeted with chicharrones de pollo for the fam and authentic rice and beans Dominican style for me (the vegetarian).
  • Saturday:  We did some major damage.  Currently 1 USD  equates to almost 48 Dominican Pesos.  If you’ve never been to the DR know that they have the BEST hair products and nail polish for the LOW LOW.  You can also find hair accessories and home goods for killer price.  The amount of items I bought for only $68 is unreal! I filled up half a suit case!  Post-Shopping I enjoyed my favorite ice cream in the whole world (just as good as the authentic Italian Gelato) with my husband before going out to Dinner with my Aunt and Uncle.

  • Sunday:  We enjoyed one last breakfast, said goodbye to my grandma, and headed one more time for some Ice Cream before arriving at the airport to go home.  Dinner was one last feast at fuddruckers.

This Morning I woke up a whopping TEN POUNDS heavier so tune in to wednesdays blog for how I plan to get rid of the post vacation indulgence.

Day 23: How to Capture Vacation Memories

Considering my next “vacation,” which for me is really just a change in office location, and I love that!  Believe me, being at home is wonderful, but being at home 7 days a week, sometimes you really need that change in location.

While I do still work on vacation, I do also enjoy my time and capture memories through photos, videos, and then eventually I turn them into digital albums that apple allows you to do on iphoto.

On this vacation I have to get my husband on board to help me out with a vlogging series that I would love to do as we are spending 3 nights in Santo Domino, and 2 Nights in Punta Cana all inclusive, to do a vlog on how to keep that vacation balance.  To show everyone how you can enjoy food and drinks without putting on 10 pounds in one week like so many do.  So let’s see if I can get him on board.  Usually the deal is I let him unplug while I put in some work.  Fingers Crossed!

The featured image is one I took at the Qumea Resort in Fiji outside of our honeymoon suite of how breathtaking our everyday scenery was.

Day 16: Summer Bucket List

I don’t really view summer any different as I do winter and spring.  It’s been that way since I graduated High School and spent all of my summers in class and working.  So my day to day activities stay the same.

We did get an unexpected chance to go to Dominican Republic visit family and spend 2 nights in Punta Cana, so that is something I’m definitely looking forward to.

Other than that the goal this summer is to test out the 75 workouts that will be in my upcoming ebook and put it together for it’s December release.  I am also currently working on getting the next LetlerFit Collection together for a Tentative august/September release along with a new site!

For the house we are working on getting the roof up, if this rain ever lets out.  We need a 48 hour clear forecast and it doesn’t seem like June will be giving that to us, which is NOT good because we’re on an insurance time crunch.  We are also working on finally finishing the stairs, but we also need a clear forecast for that to use the laminate cutter outside and leave the wooden part of the rails to dry outside so the stain doesn’t stink up the house again.

Day 13: Where would I go if I had the chance this summer?

If I had to choose, It would hands down be a Mediterranean cruise for 2 reasons:

  1.  My husband has never been to Italy and is dying to see Rome.  Rome is actually my favorite city that I have ever visited so I for one don’t mind revisiting.
  2. The cruise takes you to Naples and Florence.  Naples I have never been to and Florence I visited for a day and left wanting to go back.  I also have never been to Cannes or Spain.  I am tempted however to lean towards the Grand Mediterranean which also takes you throughout several places in Greece.

Day 2: Most Meaningful Vacation Memory

June 2nd of this blog challenge calls for the most meaningful vacation memory. This one has been a piece of cake to remember.  Despite Fiji being the most recent vacation it is most memorable.

We rung in the new year before anyone else in the world because of where Fiji falls in the international dateline, which was a pretty spectacular feeling.  So not only did we begin 2017 knowing we celebrated it first but we also rung in the new year on a beach in fiji, together, as husband and wife on our first ever vacation alone together.  I have no idea how we will ever top this past new year.
