Ever wonder what risk factors are actually connected to diseases? Well let’s take a look at obesity, physical inactivity, and low cardiovascular efficiency as they are 3 risk factors that can be avoided through exercise.⠀
-Obesity is linked to heart disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, stroke, and diabetes⠀
-Physical inactivity is linked to all of the above except for stroke.⠀
-Low cardiovascular efficiency is linked to heart disease, hypertension, and stroke⠀

Stop Exercising For Aesthetics

STOP exercising for aesthetics as the #1 reason behind why you workout. Aesthetics DOES NOT equal physiology. It isn’t even quantifiable. You can’t tell someone how big their bicep should be the way you can tell them loaded plyometrics shouldn’t exceed 5% of your body weight. You can’t make a 6 pack mandatory for everyone the way you can make healthy body fat mandatory for everyone because we know that being at a healthy body fat decreases your risk of metabolic disease and more…where as abs simply depend on your genetic propensity to store visceral fat⠀

Exercise is NEVER an independent variable for aesthetics. You can’t get away with just exercising to get to your aesthetic goal. You MUST eat right and also take into account your genetics. Exercise + Nutrition + Genetics = “Aesthetics” ⠀

On a Mission to Empower Women into Fitness

Yesterday, I received a DM from a man on instagram who was offended that my bio stated on a mission to  because he thinks my mission should be to empower both men and women.  This inspired today’s post.

I was a little take back after I read the DM mostly because usually I get X rated unsolicited DM’s from thirsty, desperate men.  This is definitely the first time I ever “offended” a male follower.

My mission is and always will be to empower women into fitness.  Why?  I am a woman, I enjoy working with women, and I am so over being sexualized (when my IG Feed is PG) by men.  Why would I want to empower the gender that for the most part leaves my in disgust on IG by what gets sent to me, said to me, etc.  In the past I have had several issues with men wanting to get coached by me and in the end, decide to do whatever they want because why take coaching from a woman (this is not a generalization because it does not happen all of the time) and that just pisses me off.

I believe women should be sticking together instead of tearing each other down.  I see far too many women criticizing other women online, but why?  What do you accomplish from that?  I also believe women are under far greater pressure to fit a certain look in order to be considered attractive.  By empowering other women into fitness, my goal is to also feel empowered by the body they were given, and to focus on becoming the best version of themselves without wanting to look like someone else.

I am always looking for women who are on the same mission to join my team of LetlerFit ambassadors.  If you vibe with female empowerment and fitness I would LOVE to have you join the team!

6 Habits That Destroy Your Otherwise Healthy Lifestyle

Creating a healthy lifestyle is all about habit.  Just like good habits, there are also bad habits.  Some of them are killing your healthy lifestyle journey, and you may not even realize it.

  1. Lack of Sleep:  Sometimes, life requires you to lose sleep, and that’s ok.  The problem is not a few nights of lack of sleep, the problem becomes too many nights without adequate sleep. Sleep is so crucial.  I know we all know how awful it feels after consistent sleep deprivation.  What many people may not know is that lack of sleep triggers an increase of cortisol hormone to be released in our bodies, which may cause us to bloat and have difficulty losing weight.  Without Sleep our bodies cannot properly repair the muscles we just worked out.
  2. Restriction:  Leading a restrictive diet, leads to binges and constant yo-yoing and that’s not what we want.  I’ve said time and time again it’s about establishing a balance of consuming more health foods than junk foods.
  3. No Exercise or No clean foods:  Sometimes eating clean is the easiest part of the nutrition and fitness equation.  For others exercise is the easy part!  But they go hand in hand! Not exercising or not eating clean but doing the other is only half of it and yields not so great results.
  4. Alcohol:  Going ham on the drinks during the weekend, EVERY weekend, is KILLER to your healthy lifestyle.
  5. Not reading nutrition labels:  Never go by the front of the packaging, read the label and pay attention to the ingredients!
  6. Not Meal Prepping:  Buying “healthy” foods from restaurants is no where near as good as prepping and cooking your own foods where YOU control everything.  Sometimes the cleaner options are still loaded with hidden salt or sugar.

The Importance of Foam Rolling

Sore muscles.  At one point in everyone’s life, I am pretty sure we have experiences the pain and discomfort of sore muscles from physical activity. What some people may not have experienced is that bittersweet feeling of foam rolling.  What exactly is foam rolling and why is it beneficial for our recovery?

Foam rollers are primarily used for SMR (self-myofascial release).  SMR put simply is when we apply a dragging pressure on out muscle tissue in order to have our body to release muscle tension and increase mobility between the sliding surfaces of our muscles. SMR is a major contributor to increased blood circulation and increased mobility range of motion in our recovering muscles.  All of which allows our recovery time to decrease and make room for more effective training sessions.

When should we foam roll? Personally, I love to roll out before and after my workout.  Before my workout as a prelude to my dynamic warm up to stretch out my muscle tissues which allows them to be less tight, decreasing my probability of pulling or straining my muscles.  Post-workout it is a great way to decrease any lactic acid build up, which also allows you to recover quicker and be less sore after a training session.

Choosing your foam roller: There are a million and one different foam rollers on the market and I have probably invested hundreds of dollars into the different kinds in hopes of finding one that works and feels the best.  From flat to pointy surfaces you name it and I have tried it.  It wasn’t until I gave The knot out a try (They did not pay me to advertise for them and I get no financial benefits from promoting them in this post).  The reason why I fell in love with the Knot out is because their rollers are not flat, they are “squiggly” for lack of a better term, which is perfect because my muscles are not flat.  So having different approaches to angles and pressure points during my roll out sessions allows me to reach larger areas and go more in depth into the muscle tissue.  They also have two different densities, soft and firm.  That again, creates diversity while rolling out your muscles.

What’s great about them is that they also have an entire section on their website dedicated to educating people on how to PROPERLY foam roll and the different ways to foam roll.
