DIY: Stair Case

We are FINALLY done with the stairs.  3 months later, but we are done!!  Originally the plan was to hire someone to do the stairs, but we were quoted by different people anywhere from $3,500 to $4000 so we said, screw that.  We’d rather use that kind of money for the floor and instead went DIY on our stairs.

1Before
Before

Before we had insanely dirty carpet, poorly kept and poorly painted black and brown rails.  What you cannot see are the cracks in the wall.  So we did the following to fix it up!

  1. My husband removed the carpet and the rails
  2. I sanded down the steps (thank GOD they had good wood under the carpet)
  3. We chose a dark brown stain and I applied 3 thick coats to every step and 1 thick coat to the borders that were previously stained.
  4. I applied 5 coats of polyurethane
  5. as I was staining and applying the coating (I did it over the course of a week in the AM and PM while the coats would have time to dry) we took the stair rails to a sandblast shop to be blasted and repainted with a brushed aluminum.
  6. Once those were ready we installed them and took the wood it previously had, measured it out, and cut new ones. (my husband did that part)
  7. when he was done I stained the new wood with the light gray stain.
  8. the part that took the longest was the laminate installation as that was a DIY for my dad and my husband (finding a time that worked for both was difficult).  With the left over laminate from the upstairs job we installed it onto the platform as it had a tacky plywood underneath that looked so bad when it was stained.
  9. The total cost of the job was $936 ($700 for the rails…but still cheaper than new ones)
1After
After

Life is so good without those dirty carpets and so much easier to maintain!  Plus we learned new skills along the way.  Though we have a few amateur drip marks, still saved $3,000 for something that in a small townhouse does not need to be a statement piece.

Fingers crossed for a new kitchen and new stairs by the end of the year!  The kitchen will also be a DIY so stay tuned!

Spring Cleaning: Episode 8

While we were looking for houses we decided to look at the higher end of our approved budget so that we could get a 3/2.5.  Our logic behind it is that we did not want to get a 2/2 which is what we actually needed and then 5-6 years from now need to transition into a larger place and not be able to for whatever reason, or if we had an accident, etc.  So in the meantime with the spare 3rd room we turned it into Xavier’s Mancave/Office which is coming in handy while he’s doing his MBA.

This room had the least amount of change!

We completely tore down the closet hangers as they were rotting, and we have an empty closet for now.  We also got rid of the bi fold doors.

we also changed out ALL of the mismatched ugly knobs and switched them out to matching more modern knobs throughout the upstairs.

The end results:

  • We repainted the room with a fresh coat of white
  • changed out the curtains for Zebra Blinds
  • Changed the bi fold doors to more modern glass sliding doors (not pictured) done by My dad and My Husband
  • Added in a light because before it was lit through lamps.  This task was also done by my father.
  • Th Bookshelf, Chair, and Desk were all given to us!
  • The carpet was one Xavier chose and was given to us as a wedding gift
  • My Dog’s bed was also a wedding gift

Spring Cleaning: Episode 7

Of all the rooms in the house, may office is definitely the one that to date (until we redo the kitchen) has seen the biggest make over!

This is the picture that was taken for realtor.com, but what you don’t see are the 3D butterflies, bees, and dragon flies glued to the wall.

So here’s what we did!

office before

  1. We removed the carpet and placed the same laminate that we had matched from the hallway and another room (next blog) for our master bedroom and now my office.
  2. We removed all of the 3D figurines and then painted on 4 thick coats of eggshell ultra white paint to remove the previous paint job
  3. We got rid of the awful curtains and added the more updated zebra blinds
  4. and then of course, turned it into my home office, we are definitely not in need of re-creating another nursery.

Spring Cleaning: Episode 6

Nowadays houses come with a living room and formal dining room.  Let’s be real, how many times a year does the formal dining room get used? Unless, you’re my mom…maybe you get to 2-3x a year.

So as someone with an online fitness business who also does Personal Training from my home 15-20 hours a week, what did we do with the original living room space? We turned it into a gym!

Before it was a gym, this is how the people we bought the house from, had their living room set up.  My preferred taste is more modern, a lot of white, grays, silvers, etc.

So we painted over the red and yellow walls, tore down the red curtains, and eventually we will be redoing the floors, but for now our DIY project turned out like this:

I purchased all of my equipment from either amazon, walmart, or bforce bands.  Got a few machines as a gift.  And put down the flooring myself!  I got the flooring from Walmart, rather inexpensive and definitely gets the job done! Easy to clean and maintain.   Eventually I will invest in a more “professional” floor, but for now this one is holding up great!

Spring Cleaning: Episode 5

In this blog I wanted to show you guys how the smallest details make a huge difference.

In our hallway all we did was

  • Paint a new coat of white which my husband and I did
  • Change out the old lights for more modern LEDs, which my Dad did
  • Get rid of the bi-fold doors and change it for mirrored sliding doors which my Dad and my husband didIMG_3581

This Project only took a weekend and made a HUGE difference.  As you can see we also got rid of the wooden cover and switched it out for some modern Zebra blinds to allow for natural light to come in.

The next big project, was NOT a DIY, and something we originally wanted to postpone to save ourselves a nice little chunk of money to put elsewhere into the house.  However, when your insurance makes it mandatory and you need those shutter credit savings, you end up having to get it done.  So here you’ll see that we painted the entranced and hired Windoor Impact to give us a new modern impact door.  All of our others windows came with accordion shutters…thank GOD.

Spring Cleaning Episode 4

While my husband and I were working on the master bedroom, my dad was simultaneously re-doing the entire closet.

Unfortunately I did not get a true before picture as our carpet used to have grimy rails and shelves along with the same carpet the bedroom had.  The picture I took was taken after my dad had patched up and sanded down all of the unevenness from patched up holes that were improperly down.  Once he fixed the old holes, he fixed the holes that happened during the demolition of the previous closet.

So my dad fixed the holes, painted the closet to match the room, installed the new system from closet maid, and I painted the baseboards.  Below is our finished product:

Spring Cleaning Episode 3

The Master Bedroom was a hot mess.  One of the things I loved the most about our bedroom though is how big it is!  I hated the yellow walls and hated the carpet (I personally am not a carpet person).  So we set off to renovate our bedroom as one of the first indoor renovations.

First we removed all of the carpet ourselves (They wanted to charge us $500 for something that took 15 minutes to do).  Then we had someone add in the laminate which we matched the one the previous homeowners had put in the hallway.  Lastly, we changed the yellow to a light gray and got rid of the fan that had never been cleaned since the house was built in 1972.  We did the painting and fan switch ourselves.

And the finished product:
