My Fitness Journey

In 2011, I started as a freshman at FIU, which included taking night classes and meant having to quit my 12 year tae kwon do journey and fitness altogether for awhile. I didn’t switch to the gym because I had never used one and I felt dumb walking into one not knowing what to do, at least that was my excuse and I held on to it until I watched myself go from 140 pounds to 170 pounds between 2012-2013. I became sluggish, my skin that I had worked so hard to clear up after puberty hormones gave me a pizza face, broke out again, and I hated not fitting into any of the clothes I’d been wearing for years. ⠀

I did every diet in the book (paleo, calorie counting, excessive caloric restriction (1200 calorie days), etc.) and nothing worked, because I viewed it as just what it was, a diet. While I was trying to get it together in the food department I got into crossfit for awhile before transitioning into powerlifting and now general fitness.⠀

I currently weigh 149 pounds (I did get down to 145 in 2014) and man has it been up and down. I am so grateful for every up and down in this fitness journey of mine because it has taught me everything I know today. Because of the downs I learned how to pick myself up and keep going. Learned how to have a good and healthy relationship with all foods (including donuts), maintain balance, and of course how to exercise.⠀

My greatest joy is applying the knowledge I’ve learned in school to be able to personally cater to every single one of my clients as well as knowledge from my own experience.⠀

If you’re currently like I used to be and just frustrated, don’t know where to begin and are looking for exercise, nutritional, or guidance in both departments shoot me a DM with your goals, I would LOVE to coach you. I know how satisfying it is to feel energized and happy because your have a healthy relationship with food and exercise.⠀⠀⠀⠀

Sticking to Your Exercise Program

Did you know sport psychologists have actually conducted research on why people begin exercising and why they do or do not stick to it? After 6 months, 50% of people who begin exercising, have quit!

We know that people begin exercising because they want to:

  • control their weight
  • reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease
  • reduce levels of anxiety and depression
  • enhance self esteem
  • socializing
  • because they enjoy it

The problem is people love to make excuses like:

  • lacking in motivation
  • perceived lack of time (number one documented excuse by the way)
  • no social support
  • lack of finance
  • feeling tired and lacking energy

Here’s why people struggle to adhere to their exercise program:

  • Sometimes trainers ignore a clients psychological readiness and focus on prescriptions solely based on fitness data without taking into account their mental state
  • trainers create an overly restrictive program
  • boring exercise prescriptions based on principles of intensity, duration, and frequency can be too much for beginners
  • traditional exercise prescription does not promote self-responsibility or empower long-term behavior

So what can we do as trainers or fitness goers to make sure we become part of the 50% who sticks to it?

  • Understand that life happens, plan for vacations, sudden deaths, last minute interferences–but do not let them derail you and defeat you
  • develop healthy coping strategies for dealing with stressful situation–i.e. do not eat your feelings
  • replace the work “should” with “want”  Should puts pressure and expectations on you.  How much better does I want to lose 10 pounds sound compared to I should lose 10 pounds?
  • Positive self-talk and avoiding negative self-talk is key!
  • identify situations that put you at risk for unhealthy behavior (possible bars, fast food restaurants, tail gates) and find a healthier solution (organic restaurants, farmers markets, going kayaking)
  • Do NOT view temporary lapses as catastrophic (for example “i already had a piece of cake and ruined my diet.  Might as well eat the whole cake and start over on Monday.”

A Major Problem with the Fitness Industry

Let’s talk about looks in the fitness industry. Are they important, of course! You should look like you practice what you preach. Does this mean you have to have 3% body fat…uhm no! If you are a woman and your body fat drops below 10% you are stepping into VERY dangerous waters. Does this mean you HAVE to have a six pack, I sure as hell do not and I know I look like I workout and know more about fitness than 99% of the people who do have six packs because well six packs are greatly affected by your genetics, my genetics favor a flat stomach, NOT sculpted abs 365 days a year.⠀

Looks can be deceiving. Someone can look the part but not act the part or study the part. When looking for a potential coach, someone you ultimately are trusting the ONE body you have been given you need to take looks as one piece to the puzzle and look at the lifestyle they live. Is their diet 90% fast food? Do they get waisted every other day? Do they know the names of the muscle they flex (trust me i’ve heard some crazy shit…like thats not your whole quad dude, that “tear drop” is part of your quads but really is the vastus medialis). Where do they get their knowledge from? From the bros? or from the scientists who research exercise physiology to make OUR lives as fitness professionals easier? The guys who find out the information that goes in textbooks or the guys that just believe whatever a label promotes?⠀

Be careful who you trust with your body! You only get one, so don’t screw it up!⠀

10 Pieces of Advice for Getting Over Your Biggest Fitness Hurdles

  1. Have a huge fitness goal?  i.e. losing 80 pounds?  When you first set a fitness goal like that it’s pretty overwhelming, but try breaking it down in increments of 5-10 pounds!  That not only sounds more doable, but mentally it’s more doable as well.
  2. Are you a scale addict?  Have someone in your house hide it from you and only give you access to it 1-2 times a month.  It’ll give you a chance to focus on changes in the way your clothing fits due to measurements changes and not changes on a scale.
  3. Baby Steps!  If you are someone starting off from the very beginning setting a goal like working out an hour a day 6 times a week, may not be very realistic. Start with 2-3x a week for 30 minutes and work you way up?
  4. Sugar addict? Quitting cold turkey doesn’t work for everyone. Focus on cutting back little by little each week.
  5. hire a trainer! Accountability goes a LONG way!  Plus, you are hopefully working out with someone who knows what they are doing so you should see accelerated results.  If you need help, I coach people ALL OVER THE WORLD! Just click here!
  6. Practice self-love.  Instead of criticizing yourself and telling yourself what you are trying to change at the gym, focus on what you LOVE about yourself and let the rest take care of itself with your workouts.
  7. Get a good night’s rest.  Lack of sleep actually inhibits weight loss and increases chances of weight gain and bloating.
  8. Restriction is the enemy, balance is your friend.  Get out of the yo-yo fitness mentality and into a more balanced lifestyles.
  9. Get yourself some cute workout clothes.  Sometimes something as simple as a pair of leggings and a killer tank can motivate you to get your booty in the gym…at least it does for me.  Shop LetlerFit Apparel
  10. Stop thinking of fitness as a chore, no one likes chores, but begin thinking of it as a hobby! Everyone loves their hobbies.

New Year, New Goals.

31 days of neglecting my blog and just feeling a massive blog plateau.  Last night I got hit with tons of new topics to start off 2018, which I am so excited to write in these upcoming weeks.

With the start of 2018, comes the mass resolution hysteria, for many they have already given up 6 days into the new year.  Why?  They verbally say the big goal out loud without actually breaking down the steps and creating the action plan needed to reach those goals.

In 2016, I wrote down my goals and how I was going to achieve them and put them by my door so that I would be reminded every day that I was working towards achieving them.  That year I was able to cross off 90% of the goals.  In 2017, I did the same thing only I did not place them somewhere I would see them every day and sadly, only hit 45% of my goals.  HUGE difference!

  1. So this year I broke my goals down into the following categories: Fitness, Business, Personal, and Social Media.
  2.  I then took green, yellow, pink, and orange flash cards and cut each color in half.
  3. Next I wrote down the main goal on the flash cards along with step by steps needed to reach that goal
  4. I found a spot on my wall that I see every day when I wake up and go to bed and taped each flash card so I am constantly looking at them and reviewing them.
  5. As I reach those goals I plan on tearing off the flash card and sticking it in my drawer.
  6. The ultimate goal of course: An empty wall by December 31, 2018.

Resolution is making the firm decision to do something, yet so many of us fall short.  This is because we get lost in the hype and forget to get down and dirty by creating the plan of action.  I hope you have not started losing motivation to chase those 2018 goals by creating an action plan, placing it somewhere you see them every day, and GO AFTER IT!

7 Pieces of Common Fitness Advice that are Completely Wrong

I did another one of these posts a while back, but today I wanted to bring you a different set of Fitness Myths:

  1. Fasted Cardio is Highly Effective:  Numerous studies on this matter are inconclusive on whether or not the benefits to fasted cardio outweigh the risk of glycogen depletion, light headedness, catabolism etc.  Eating the correct nutrients before your workout is what give you energy, contributes to fat loss, and makes for a more effective workout.  Fasted cardio makes you think you’re working harder but its because your rate of perceived exertion is increased due to your body running on fumes.
  2. Anyone can excel at whatever sport they want:  Actually we are all born with specific muscle fibers.  Elite sprinters probably won’t be seen winning a marathon…different fiber type composition.  Baseball pitchers probably won’t be seen winning gold as an olympic lifter.  Get your feet wet in a variety of sports and your body can tell you, which sports it was best meant to play, but not everyone is physically capable of becoming an olympian and don’t beat yourself up over it!
  3. Push through injuries:  The common walk it off mentality is AWFUL.  Sharp shooting pain is how our body signals us something is not right and unless you’re fighting in a career altering match or running in the finals at the olympics, injuries are not something you should just “walk off.”
  4. Avoid Cardio to Make Gains:  While excessive cardio is not good for the gains, we should all be doing some form of cardiovascular as the immunological, improved performance, increased recovery, and sooo many other benefits.
  5. Go 100% Every Single Day:  Our body NEEDS rest, for some it’s in the form of active rest, but it is considered rest nonetheless….if we expect our body to perform at 100 everyday there is no time for your muscles to repair and grow.  Not allowing for proper recovery also increases stress levels in our body which can lead to gut inflammation and illness.
  6. Squats Are Bad For your Knees: Bad form is bad for your knees.  Squats are an incredibly effective compound exercise, I use them often for even my elderly clients.
  7. Ab Exercises are What Give you Abs:  Did you know some people with 6 packs don’t do a single crunch, russian twist, or sit up? Shocking I know.  While those exercises may contribute to enhancing a reduced waistline brought on by clean diet…they are not necessary.  A heavy squat, properly lunge paired with a medicine ball rotation, even a bent over row are highly effective exercises for your abs.  Genetics and diet go a longer way in improving the appearance of your abdomen.
