Have you watched any Netflix health docs lately?

What the Health?, Forks Over Knives, Fed Up (personal fave), Food Matters, Vegucated, are just a few of the Netflix documentaries you can find on food.  There are plenty more, but those are the ones I’ve seen recently.  I must admit I have a love-hate relationship with most of them leaning more towards the hate than the love.

Here’s what I do love:

  • I love how they are bringing awareness to fruits and vegetables and how we need to increase the amount we are eating.  The majority of us don’t even get half our recommended daily dosage.
  • I love how they shed light on the atrocities of the meat slaughtering industry, because regulations NEED to happen.  The real animals are us humans, who choose not to find more humane ways to put down the meat that we do eat.  Personally I am a vegetarian, I believe in doing my part, but I also do not believe everyone needs to go vegan.  I’m a realist who believes it should be a personal choice as to whether or not someone decides to consume meat, and because I am a realist I know not everyone will remove or decrease the amount of meat in their diet, which is why more humane treatment of animals needs to be put in place.
  • I love that they shed light on the amount of garbage they are adding to meat, poultry, and farm raised fish.
  • I love how are they are raising awareness to the amount of added sugar the majority of us eat without realizing it
  • I love that they bring awareness to how food can help prevent more health issues than the pharmaceutical companies want you to believe.  YOU NEED A BALANCE PEOPLE!

Here’s what I don’t like

  • How EXTREME and one-sided they are.  The ones pushing people towards veganism more so than the ones warning people to stay away from wheat and sugar.  At least the one’s I have seen about wheat frequently give the disclaimer that the negative effects of wheat more so impact the gluten intolerant.  The documentaries about sugar also frequently express the need more consuming added sugar in moderation.  However the ones that promote veganism, never once touch base on the idea of grass-fed or organic meat and poultry alternatives that are worth the investment due to significantly less pesticides, etc.
  • I do not like how they neglect to go over the differences between complete and incomplete proteins and how animal proteins are complete proteins where as plant based protein usually requires 2-3 different sources to reach the complete protein status.
  • I do not like how they neglect to mention that for athletes looking to get stronger, IGF1 only found in red meat is a legal and natural “steroid” in the sense that is helps our strength gains.  I’m not saying you won’t get stronger if you only eat vegetarian or vegan because that is not the case.  The gains can come faster though with the help of red meat, but I opt out of that natural boost.
  • I don’t like how they neglect to talk about the dirty dozen (aka the most contaminated fruits and vegetables) that everyone should prioritize as buying organic because of the amount of pesticides found in them.
    • Peaches, Apples, Bell Peppers, Celery, Nectarines, Strawberries, Cherries, Pears, Grapes, Spinach, Lettuce, Potatoes
  • I don’t like how they do not touch on the subject of how easy it is to also be overweight and have health issues has a vegetarian or vegan.  I personally know way too many overweight, anemic, or overall unhealthy vegetarians and vegans

Overall for people who do not have extremist personalities and tendencies I would recommend educating themselves with these documentaries, however also keeping in mind that there are 2 sides to every story.  I wish they would make them with less of a bias.  I believe they’d have more success reaching larger audiences if they did.  I also believe they would make meat-eaters understand the POV of vegans and vice versa.  We all know that vegan or meat eater that tries to make the other side feel like terrible people for choosing to eat or not eat meat.  We need to educate people on both sides and THEN let people decide and respect their decisions!  The lesson continues to be that everything in MODERATION is key!

Gaining 10 Pounds in 6 Days

Some Fitness Professionals think they’re above eating whatever they want on vacation, while others are like me…they go IN. I eat well most of the time so why not indulge and splurge for a week on vacation?

Be prepared though because weight gain will most likely occur if you take my route and eat what’s put in front of you.  Also realize that most of what you gain will be water and not actually fat.

Why is this?  If you regularly keep up with your water drinking and then all of the sudden cut the water intake by more than 50% your body actually will retain water.  If you also are not used to a high sodium diet, eating foods high in sodium all day every day also create bloating and water retention.  48 hours post 10 pound weight gain in 6 days and I am down 5 pounds ONLY going back to eating my normal foods and drinking my regular gallon of water a day.  Weight that goes down that quickly is not usually fat weight.  Because I know my body already, I know that I probably have 3 more pounds of water weight that I will lost this week and then into next week drop the final 1-2 pounds and get back to “normal.”

So whatever you do when you get on the scale post vacation, DO NOT PANIC!  DO NOT go into mega restrictive mode, just get back into your regular diet, water, and exercise routine.

What if you eat a poor diet on a regular basis and then going on vacation to eat more crappy foods than what your usual crappy diet consists of?  Well, chances are that weight gain may not come off as quickly…and you probably gained more fat weight than the person who usually eats healthy did while on vacation…

Vacation Mode: Made in the USA with Dominican Parts

I spent this past week in Dominican Republic visiting family and for overall vacation.  It was INSANE we packed so much into so little time, I swear I woke up with a travel hangover.

  • Tuesday: we left Miami and arrived in the late afternoon.  I thought I would have a chance to unpack and catch up on some work, clients, etc.  Wrong!  I had 15 minutes to catch up with emails/clients and get dressed for a dinner at my grandparents house where the beast that s my stomach was unleashed.  4 plates od the best ceviche and 1 massive bowl of spaghetti and mushroom sauce later…despite the 15 pastelitos, fresh island mangos, and refresco country club we had on our way from the airport.  But hey, what’s travel without good food?
  • wednesday:  We left to punta cana with a pit stop in cap cana.  Next trip to the DR I definitely want to make more time for Cap Cana and go back…it is BREATHTAKING.  It’s a developing city/resort town, only it is going to be bigger and better than Punta Cana in my opinion.  Here we had MORE food!  Delicious ceviche, appetizer samplers, spicy shrimp tacos, and an epic nutella calzone.  We later arrived to Punta Cana with hopes of cooling off and relaxing by the beach, but we arrived as everything was closing down so we relaxed in our room (I caught up on some work) and head straight to dinner for even MORE food!
  • Thursday:  Our only full day at the Melia Caribe resort in Punta Cana.  Despite Only spending roughly 36 hours at the resort I ate for 5 (more food not pictured), but it was so refreshing to be connected to wifi from the beach and not just my sofa.
  • Friday:  We left the resort around midday and headed over to la Romana for a tourist stop in Altos de Chavon.  We arrived back to the capital a little later than expected, greeted with chicharrones de pollo for the fam and authentic rice and beans Dominican style for me (the vegetarian).
  • Saturday:  We did some major damage.  Currently 1 USD  equates to almost 48 Dominican Pesos.  If you’ve never been to the DR know that they have the BEST hair products and nail polish for the LOW LOW.  You can also find hair accessories and home goods for killer price.  The amount of items I bought for only $68 is unreal! I filled up half a suit case!  Post-Shopping I enjoyed my favorite ice cream in the whole world (just as good as the authentic Italian Gelato) with my husband before going out to Dinner with my Aunt and Uncle.

  • Sunday:  We enjoyed one last breakfast, said goodbye to my grandma, and headed one more time for some Ice Cream before arriving at the airport to go home.  Dinner was one last feast at fuddruckers.

This Morning I woke up a whopping TEN POUNDS heavier so tune in to wednesdays blog for how I plan to get rid of the post vacation indulgence.

Day 28: Favorite Cheat Meal

I have 5 go to cheats/cravings

  1. Donuts from Mojo Donuts
  2. Pizza
  3. Cookies from Night Owl Cookie co
  4. Oreos, especially the blondies
  5. Doritos-Cool Ranch

The problem is that recently I got allergy tested for mildy being allergic to eggs and lactose and now all but 1 (the oreos-They’re actually vegan) of my go to cheats doesn’t make me feel like vomiting after eating it.  I can handle 1 pizza, but who eats just 1 slice?!

I’ve gotten several reassurances that some mild allergies can disappear, so I’m hoping by getting rid of eggs and lactose for a while will eventually help.

I’m curious if anyone has been in the same situation and their experiences?  Comment Below!

Day 27: Share you favorite fitness blogs

I actually am not a big fan of most fitness blogs and here’s why:

  • If you go online to many of the top fitness magazines (they all have online blogs) you see that the contributors listed most have their masters or even phD in exercise physiology, however if you look up their online blogs it’s loaded with celebrity “fitness and nutrition” tips.
  • Many blogs are filled with verbage that’s easily marketable but scientifically misleading.

However the blogs put out by NCSF (National Council of Strength and Fitness) are all factual and incredibly helpful.

When choosing a blog to read ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Who’s the writer?  Do they actually have a fitness/nutrition education or is it simply a holiday?
  2. Do they wear waist trainers with magic sweat creams?  If they do, don’t even bother!
  3. Is it a celebrity telling you how she got magically hit her goals?  Newsflash, if they didn’t crash diet they paid a professional trainer and dietician to get them there because they’re clueless.

Day 26: Fruit Lover? Who isn’t!

Fruits are definitely a lot more fun to eat as opposed to vegetables.  They’re sweeter and have a better texture in my opinion.

Here are my top 10 ways I incorporate fruit into my diet:

  1. Whole grain toast and peanut butter with sliced bananas for a pre-workout
  2. mixed berries in my oatmeal with chia seeds
  3. Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice (no sugar added and pulp still in the glass) with my breakfast or as a snack
  4. In a fruit smoothie with mint leaves and herbalife wild berry or peach mango beverage drink mix
  5. When my carbs are low for the day I love organic dried mango slices (be careful that the ONLY ingredient is mango
  6. Whole grain crackers and peanut butter with sliced berries on top
  7. Banana and Peanut Butter for a quick and fulfilling snack
  8. As dessert with some drizzled cookie butter
  9. I love putting lemon slices in my water whenever I’m tired of plain water
  10. Dried fruit is a killer additive to homemade trail mix

Day 25: Favorite Family Night Activities

I am the definition of a home body.  9 times out of 10 I will choose staying in as opposed to going out.  Luckily, my husband is the same way.  Our usual Friday, Saturday, AND Sunday night consists of netflix or firestick, home popped popcorn, and cuddles with our 2 cats, and dog.  We wouldn’t have it any other way.

The days we don’t stay home we usually are visiting family.
