Day 26: Fruit Lover? Who isn’t!

Fruits are definitely a lot more fun to eat as opposed to vegetables.  They’re sweeter and have a better texture in my opinion.

Here are my top 10 ways I incorporate fruit into my diet:

  1. Whole grain toast and peanut butter with sliced bananas for a pre-workout
  2. mixed berries in my oatmeal with chia seeds
  3. Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice (no sugar added and pulp still in the glass) with my breakfast or as a snack
  4. In a fruit smoothie with mint leaves and herbalife wild berry or peach mango beverage drink mix
  5. When my carbs are low for the day I love organic dried mango slices (be careful that the ONLY ingredient is mango
  6. Whole grain crackers and peanut butter with sliced berries on top
  7. Banana and Peanut Butter for a quick and fulfilling snack
  8. As dessert with some drizzled cookie butter
  9. I love putting lemon slices in my water whenever I’m tired of plain water
  10. Dried fruit is a killer additive to homemade trail mix

Day 12: How to fight Burnout

So this post is supposed to be advice on how to handle summer blogging burnout, but since I do not by any means consider myself a blogger, I’m going to write about summer fitness goal burnout.

Because this society views fitness in short term, versus long term, people spend the first 3-4 months of the year shedding their holiday wait and prepping for the summer only to slowly fall into a downward spiral to repeat the same toxic cycle over when the new year hits.

So, how do you break the cycle?  I get that summer is hard because you have more BBQs, More vacations, more time to go to the beach, go out, but what about the goals you’ve worked so hard to achieve?  How do you keep them in Check?  There’s no need to avoid going out in order to avoid gaining weight.

10 Tips to Making you Summer body, your winter Body:

  1. Keep Alcohol to 1-3 drinks a week
  2. Don’t drink your calories in juices, sodas, etc.
  3. Make healthy choices at restaurants!  Most places have a light and fit menu with more realistic portion sizes.
  4. Request cutting the salt a restaurant uses for the dish in half, or excluding it altogether because chances are they hide salt in the sauces without realizing it.
  5. Don’t skip your workouts!
  6. Replace a meal with a healthy shake!  I’ve been drinking the same meal replacement every day for 4 years now and love it! Definitely helps keep me in check when I’ve gone too far passed moderation!  Click here for more info!
  7. Don’t forget your water!  Avoid retaining water, skin break outs, and dehydration from the summer heat!
  8. Swap the fried for the grilled!
  9. Swap the processed sugars for REAL sugars found in fruits, vegetables, and grains.
  10. It’s ok to eat the pizza and have the slice of cake!  It’s just not ok to eat more of that than you do whole foods!

Surviving the Holidays

We are officially 2 days away from Christmas eve and 3 days away from Christmas Day.  This is definitely my favorite time of year simply because I’m a foodie at heart.  All of my favorite foods are constantly crossing my path.  Cupcakes, gingerbread cookies, brownies, you name it.  Weight gain and losing the entire year’s worth of results are also synonymous during this time of year.  Here’s my philosophy:

  1. You have been working hard all year! Did you reach your goals? If so, don’t deny yourself the foods that are out because of the holidays.  It’s ok to enjoy them.  LIVE A LITTLE!!
  2. Keep one thing constant.  If you choose to be a crazy maniac with your diet, then it’s ok to skip out on the exercise to enjoy time with your family or get the house ready for holiday festivities.  If you choose to be a glutten like me, keep your workouts consistent.
  3. Don’t go out of your way to pig out, but if you’re presented with he opportunity I recommend a 50/50 plate. 50% healthy, 50% indulgence. This is the time of year where I go from 75% clean 25% not so clean to 60% clean and 40% not so clean.
  4. The worst thing you can do is feel guilty about what you eat.  My philosophy is, if it’s going to make you feel guilty, make you feel like you have to burn off every calorie you just ate, then don’t eat.  It’s not worth driving yourself mad.
  5. Don’t have a next year mentality.  It’s a lifestyle for a reason.  It’s ok to indulge the way its ok to choose to eat healthy.  Simply go back to choosing a greater majority of health foods once the festivities are over.
  6. If you are far from your 2015 fitness goals the way I was in 2014, pick 2 days of indulgence instead of maybe 4 days of glutteny.  But don’t deprive yourself either, it leads to a greater binge in the new year.

Hope my tips help! Enjoy the holidays, the food, the extra family time!

Dark Chocolate

A few weeks ago I was asked to blog about Dark Chocolate. So here I go.

When compared to milk and white chocolate, dark chocolate has a lot less fat.  On top of that the more cocoa you look for in dark chocolate (60% or more) the more flavanols it contains.  Flavanols are plant based phytonutrients that provide your  body with antioxidants.  Dark chocolate helps reduce LDL cholesterol (aka the unwanted cholesterol), it helps to lower blood pressure, is rich in vitamins and minerals (Vitamin K, Calcium, magnesium, and Iron), and it also contains phenylethylamine (PEA), an organic compound that is associated to triggering the release of endorphins and serotonin in your brain (the happy chemicals).

Of course, this is all within moderation.  Too much Dark chocolate is not good either because it is high in caffeine.  It also contains tyramyne, a chemical that has been linked to causing migraines so if you are prone to migraines I suggest to stay away (you should always consult with your Physician).  Dark chocolate also contains oxalates which can cause a rise in urine oxalate excretion that may lead to kidney stone formation.  Also, refrain from enjoying your dark chocolate with Milk, as it bind the antioxidants and keeps them from doing their job inside the body.
