Get Started with Your Running Goals

womanrunnerDecember is officially here, and you’re probably thinking about your resolutions and goals for 2017. Is running regularly one of these goals? If so, here are a couple of tips to help get you started towards reaching your new fitness goal.

Now that you’ve made your resolution to start running, tell the world! Let your friends and family know, start a journal, give yourself motivational reminders, and most of all, practice commitment. Having a supportive group of people can help you stay on track.

Before you begin running, you’re going to need a good pair of shoes, specifically ones that are made for running. Instead of heading to a department store, you may be better off going to a smaller store where someone with knowledge of running shoes can help find the right pair, especially if it’s your first time.

Speaking of purchases, don’t overdo it. Besides a good pair of shoes, you may want a sports bra and perhaps some fitness shorts, but don’t let someone persuade you to invest in a bunch of fancy gear that you probably won’t need.

Remember that progress is incremental. If you’ve never been a runner, you’re probably not going to run several miles on your first attempts. Start with small goals so that you can see results and eventually you’ll start to see bigger and better progress. Setting a lofty goal that’s unrealistic will only serve to demotivate you.
