Older Women and Meat Heavy Diets

olderwomenproteinAre you a woman over the age of 50 who consumes a high protein diet? If so, you may want to consider changing up your eating habits. Research presented at the American Heart Association’s (AHA) annual meeting shows that women who follow a high protein diet have a greater risk of heart failure, especially if the protein is derived from animal meat. Women who get their protein from vegetables have a significantly reduced risk of heart failure, close to 20 percent in fact. These vegetable sources include lentils, beans, quinoa, and nuts.

Heart failure happens when the heart becomes incapable of pumping sufficient blood to fill the needs of the body. Over five million people around the country have faced heart failure, and it remains one of the most common reasons why older individuals end up in the hospital. Interestingly, the study does not reveal why protein may increase the risk of heart failure.

Per the AHA, a meal plan that includes poultry, whole grains, fish, fruits, low-fat dairy, nuts, and vegetables is highly recommended. Red meat and sugary beverages or food should be kept to a minimum.
